UY 156 Cover-1
The pencils for UY 156 cover was done with a 3mm 2H mechanical pencil, then reinforced with a 5mm HB lead on 2-ply 500 series Strathmore bristol board. The paper size is 11×17 inches, with a 10×15.5 image area.

This is part 2 of the 3-part Secret of the Hell Screen story. It is an Inspector Ishida Mystery, so I wanted an image that provokes questions but does not give way any plot elements. This scene does not occur in the story at all, but it does convey the mood of the story.

UY 156 cover-2
The first stage of inking was done with a broken in Koh-i-Noor ArtPen filled with Badger Black Opaque ink (old formula). The older pen has a more flexible nib and so lays down a wider line with a greater variation in weights.

UY 156 cover3
The finished piece. The foreground textures were drawn with the same older pen, but the backgrounds were done with a newer ArtPen that has a more rigid and thinner line. As this pen gets broken in, it will replace the older one. The blacks were spotted with a Pentel Brush Pen filled with the Badger ink. The rain drops over the blacks were added with a white Uni-Ball Signo pigment pen. The storm that hit in UY 151 is still going strong, and will be for the next couple of issues.

I turned in the art for UY 155: The Secret of the Hell Screen, an Inspector Ishida Mystery.

The art was drawn on 11×17 inch 2-ply 500 series Strathmore cold press bristol board. The image area is 10×15 inches.

UY 155 page 6-1
Pencilled with a 3mm 2H mechanical pencil, then some lines were reinforced with a 5mm HB lead.

UY 155 page 6-2
It was lettered with a Medium tip Rotring ArtPen, then the word balloons were drawn with a Koh-i-Noor ArtPen. The borders were ruled with a 3.5 technical pen.

UY 155 page 6-3
After the perspectives were determined using vanishing points, I started inking with an older Koh-i-Noor ArtPen (discontinued) filled with Badger Black Opaque ink. The older pen is broken in and has a nice flex to it, able to make thin and bold lines with the same stroke. The blacks were spotted with a Pentel Brush Pen filled with the Badger ink.

UY 155 page 6-4
Textures were added using a newer ArtPen which has a stiffer point and unwavering line. After this pen gets broken in, I will use it to lay down the bolder lines.

UY 155 page 6-5
The page is erased, rain is added with a broad white Uniball Signo pen, and the page is finished.

Saga 6 tip-in 1

It’s time to sign more tip-in plates. This one is for the UY Saga #6 hardcovers. The art was mostly done with ink and watercolors on 9×12″ 4-ply Strathmore bristol board. The rains were drawn with an opaque white gel pen.

They are called “tip-ins” because they are tipped into the book during the binding process. This is an edition of 1500, which means that, with Artist Proofs, Publisher Proofs and allowing for mistakes in binding, I will will have to sign more than 1700 plates.

I used to do an Usagi head sketch with every signature, but that would take a full week to do. With 3 Saga editions along the regular annual UY collection, I would be signing for a full month each year. Now I just do a signature, and it takes less than two days. That’s more time for working on stories.

Here is a link to an interview I did while at the Lucca Comics and Games Festival in Italy. It took place in an old cathedral, which featured an exhibit of Charles Schulz’s Peanuts which celebrates its 65th anniversary.

I should point out that the Torre Guinigi, a tower with a small forest of oak trees on its top, is a famous landmark of the city.
